Barcelona, May 22, 2025 – Fotonostrum, The Mediterranean House of Photography, and ONO Arte proudly present Bowie X Sukita, an extraordinary exhibition that pays tribute to one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, through the unique friendship and lens of the renowned Japanese photographer, Masayoshi Sukita. The exhibition will open on May 22, 2025, and will be available to the public from May 23 to September 15, 2025.
This captivating exhibition brings together more than 70 iconic photographs that span several decades of David Bowie’s life and career, from his transformative Ziggy Stardust era to his final years. A testament to the enduring bond between Bowie and Sukita, the collection showcases intimate moments captured during their numerous photoshoots over the years. From the glam rock revolution of the 1970s to the artistic evolution of the 1980s and 1990s, these images illustrate not only the evolution of Bowie as an artist but also the deep personal connection shared between the two.
The exhibition also features some lesser-known photos of Bowie taken in Japan, providing a glimpse into the musician’s time in the country, a place where he experienced both cultural inspiration and deep personal reflection. Additionally, several iconic concert photographs from different phases of his career are included, offering visitors a dynamic view of Bowie’s electrifying stage presence and his connection with audiences worldwide.

While Sukita’s photographic work with Bowie began in the early 1970s, it continued throughout the decades, right up to Bowie’s passing in 2016. Their collaboration resulted in some of the most iconic and enduring images of “the man who sold the world”, capturing the essence of an artist who continually reinvented himself while maintaining a profound sense of mystery and otherworldliness.
With this exhibition, Fotonostrum reaffirms its commitment to bringing the great masters of photography to Barcelona, presenting, for the first time, a major exhibition from Asia. Bowie X Sukita offers a unique opportunity for fans and visitors to experience the artistic and personal journey of one of the most celebrated musicians of all time, as seen through the eyes of one of his closest collaborators.
The press conference will be attended by Aki Sukita, the nephew of Masayoshi Sukita and manager of the collection, Maurizio Guidoni and Vittoria Mainoldi from ONO Arte, the representatives of Masayoshi Sukita in Europe and curators of the project, and Julio Hirsch-Hardy, the founder of Fotonostrum Gallery.
This exhibition marks the transition from FotoNostrum's previous gallery at Carrer Diputació 48 to its new space in the cultural heart of Barcelona, on Carrer Princesa 19, next to the Picasso Museum and the MOCO Museum.
